Through systematic social interventions, digital empowerment and health infrastructure, the lawmaker representing Ikorodu is setting a new benchmark for legislative representation.
Across Nigeria’s political landscape, representative governance is too frequently reduced to seasonal patronage, transient distributions that vanish as quickly as the electoral cycle turns.
In the Ikorodu Federal Constituency of Lagos State, however, a different operational model has taken root under the stewardship of Honorable Babajimi Benson.
Over his tenure in the House of Representatives, where he also serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Defense, Benson has sought to move constituency administration away from ad-hoc welfare toward structured, institutionalised social development.
The approach reflects a calculated attempt to address systemic poverty and economic stagnation through sustainable interventions.
At the center of this framework is social protection. Recognizing that economic vulnerability directly impairs civic participation, Benson established the iCare Foundation, which launched the iCare FoodBank known locally as Apo Anu (Bag of Mercy).
Functioning as a structured food-security initiative, the program delivers monthly relief packages to thousands of low-income households, widows, and elderly residents across Ikorodu, establishing a vital baseline safety net during periods of severe economic pressure.
Yet welfare relief forms only one part of a broader strategy focused on economic self-reliance and technological inclusion.
To address youth unemployment, Benson’s administration launched StartUp Ikorodu, an incubation project providing micro-grants, technical mentorship and workspace resources to emerging entrepreneurs.
This is complemented by the iCare Job Portal, a digital clearinghouse linking local graduates directly with employment opportunities across Lagos, alongside targeted vocational programmes in solar engineering, ICT, and modern agronomy.
This strategy reached a milestone over the weekend at the 2026 Renewed Hope Mega Empowerment scheme held along Obafemi Awolowo Road, Itamaga, Ikorodu. Moving beyond standard interventions, Benson deployed an unprecedented array of economic assets, mobility equipment, off-grid power solutions and direct capital injections designed to transform local enterprise and public safety.
The multi-million naira intervention featured the official distribution of:
“10 transformers, 5 security patrol vehicles, and 1,400 household solar systems. 7 brand-new buses, 10 cars, 41 mini buses (Korope) and 20 motorcycles and electric bikes. 50 large freezers, 150 medium freezers, 100 sewing machines, 20 generators, 20 welding generators, 20 vulcanizing machines and 20 grinding machines. 250 units of 3kg gas cylinders, 450 units of 6kg gas cylinders and 100 units of 12kg gas cylinders. ₦300 Million in cash empowerment delivered straight to local entrepreneurs, traders, and vulnerable households.”
In tandem with these commercial assets, the drive targeted digital access by leveraging an unconventional network of over 200 community, student, professional and political WhatsApp groups to distribute laptops to young tech practitioners, creators and journalists ensuring that essential productivity tools reached those who need them most.
Beyond human capital and immediate economic relief, Benson’s tenure has focused heavily on physical and health infrastructure. Working in partnership with state and federal entities, his office facilitated the construction and donation of the 80-bed Mother and Child Hospital in Imota, alongside upgrades to several Primary Healthcare Centres and ongoing developments for a local Trauma Centre.
Infrastructure efforts are further visible in the Lightup Ikorodu initiative, a wide-scale solar streetlighting program designed to enhance neighborhood security and sustain nighttime commerce.
Civic engagement and administrative transparency have been institutionalised through the creation of IKD 106.1 FM, a community radio station dedicated to local broadcasting.
The platform allows constituents to scrutinise legislative activities, raise local grievances and track project execution in real time, fostering a tighter feedback loop between the lawmaker and the electorate.
This constituency-level work operates within a supportive state framework. The administrative alignment with the Lagos State Government, reflected in the joint execution of local projects alongside state leaders, including Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has streamlined the delivery of federal initiatives across the Ikorodu division.
While parliamentary commendations and political recognitions inevitably follow such projects, the true measure of Benson’s tenure lies in the durability of these social structures.
By replacing transactional political handouts with measurable, technology-driven development models and massive capital interventions, Babajimi Benson offers a compelling blueprint for modern legislative representation in Nigeria, one rooted in institutional continuity, economic empowerment and public accountability.
Leadership is ultimately judged not by rhetorical flourishes, but by the tangible improvements it brings to daily human lives and the institutional resilience it leaves behind.
