Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) joined the rest of Lagos State in commemorating the 2026 Lagos State Tree Planting Day, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
The event, held at C&S primary school Ogolonto, represented another significant step towards promoting a healthier ecosystem and encouraging residents to embrace tree planting as a collective responsibility.
The Executive Chairman of Ikorodu West LCDA, Hon. Otunba Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju (FCA, FCTI), was represented by the Supervisor for Environment, Hon. Adewale Salisu, who welcomed representatives from the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, community leaders, stakeholders, students, and residents.
In his address, Hon. Adewale Salisu emphasized that the wellbeing of every community is directly linked to the health of its environment. He described trees as the "natural lungs" of Ikorodu West, noting that planting trees is one of the most effective ways to combat the effects of climate change, improve air quality, and preserve the environment for future generations.
Representing the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Mr. Olagoke Moruf delivered an insightful presentation on the importance of tree planting and climate awareness. He explained that climate refers to the long-term pattern of weather conditions and stressed that climate change is increasingly affecting communities through rising temperatures, flooding, and environmental degradation.
Mr. Moruf highlighted the many advantages of tree planting, including reducing carbon emissions, preventing soil erosion, providing shade, improving biodiversity, and enhancing the overall quality of life. He urged residents to see every tree planted today as an investment in a healthier and more sustainable tomorrow.
The event also featured the symbolic planting of trees by government officials, stakeholders, and participants, demonstrating their shared commitment to protecting the environment and building a greener Lagos.
As Lagos State continues to champion environmental conservation, Ikorodu West LCDA remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable development and encourage residents to play active roles in safeguarding the environment.
